Beautiful Bamboo: Timber Worktops from Kitchen Surplus

Bamboo is a unique choice in wooden worktops as technically, it is not a wood but a grass. Because of this, it does not have growth rings like our other timber worktops do. Instead it has a uniform pattern of visible pores that are broken up by nodes, which creates an interesting and unusual worktop. Naturally water-resistant, bamboo is an incredibly durable option and is available from as either bamboo or caramel bamboo.

Our bamboo worktops are the lighter of the two options and are comprised of many 20mm wide staves that are sandwiched together to create a 40mm thick surface. These beautiful pale work surfaces will gradually darken over time to reach a golden hue that showcases the intricate and unusual pore structure of the grass with even more contrast. Bamboo is one of the most ‘green’ of all our timber worktops as it is hugely sustainable; the species we use is fully grown within 5 – 6 years. This means that any plants harvested can be replenished quickly, making it an incredibly environmentally friendly option.

Caramel bamboo has the same beautiful surface texture as our regular bamboo, but is treated slightly differently after it has been harvested. Rather than allowing the bamboo to dry and straighten naturally, caramel bamboo is heated by steam or boiling. By caramelising the natural sugars that are present, the final colour of the bamboo is darkened, resulting in the beautiful caramel shade you can see in the image. This process does not affect the bamboo in terms of strength or resilience, making it ideal for use in timber worktops. Caramel bamboo work surfaces are also constructed from many thin staves that are 20mm in width that together create a worktop that measures 40mm in depth.

Like all the other worktops in our range, both our bamboo and caramel bamboo options look beautiful in a number of settings and are sanded to 150-grit finish before we deliver them. It’s up to you to apply the finish of your choice before installation.

Ordering Rustic Oak Worktops? Don’t forget your Worktop Aftercare Kit!

If you are ordering Rustic Oak worktops or any of the other timber worktops in our range, you’ll want to make sure you’re properly kitted-out to carry-out the correct oiling procedures during installation.

Our Worktop Aftercare Kit includes a selection of products that make it easy to sand and oil the surface: 4 x foam oiling brushes of varying sizes, and 5 x denibbing pads to lightly sand the surface between coats of oil.

Before installing wood worktops it is very important to oil all faces of the worktop three times with Rustins Danish Oil; you will need 1L to fully protect every 3M of worktop. The end grain and any cut edges will absorb a larger quantity of oil and will therefore require up to 6 coats for full protection. We recommend that you allow approximately 6-8 hours between coats to allow the oil to dry. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe away any surplus oil 30 minutes after application of each coat.

Buy Exotic Timber Worktops from Kitchen Surplus!

Solid timber worktops are a beautiful kitchen feature, and none so striking as those constructed from our stunning exotic woods. Iroko, zebrano and wenge are distinctive timbers, each with their own unique aesthetics. If you are tempted by one of these eye-catching solid wood worktops, you can find out more in today’s blog:

Iroko Worktops

Combining deep golden tones, iroko worktops feature an array of shades from warm honey to dark, rich chocolate. These lustrous wood work surfaces showcase eye-catching iridescence in some of their 40mm-wide staves – one of the reasons this hard-wearing timber is used for ornaments and ceremonial instruments in its African homeland. The colour of these worktops will become enriched with age, darkening to a warm bronze hue.

Zebrano Worktops

If you would like to infuse your kitchen with character, why not add an island unit with impressive zebrano worktops? Sometimes known as ‘zebra wood’, it’s not hard to tell how this timber got its name! Incorporating dark chocolate markings across beautiful caramel-coloured grain, this work surface is truly distinctive.

Wenge Worktops

Dark and dramatic, wenge worktops are perfect for creating a sleek, stylish look in contemporary kitchens. They are also immensely durable, sometimes described as the wooden equivalent to granite. 50% more dense than oak – which itself is incredibly robust – this worktop is not only luxurious but also one of great strength.

No matter which worktop you select, all our wood is kiln-dried to ensure drying is thorough and to protect against decay. Once carefully assembled with finger-jointing and bonded under high pressure, every worktop is sanded to a smooth 150-grit finish ready for oiling. How to Create a Rustic-Style Kitchen with Timber Worktops

Timber worktops are the ideal kitchen component for creating a warm and welcoming rustic feel. Well-suited to traditional country cottages, the use of natural materials is imperative to this look – so don’t be afraid to go to town!

An essential surface for producing this wholesome kitchen style is, of course, our rustic oak worktops. Complete with lots of natural features, every one of these kitchen countertops is full of charm and unique characteristics.

To complement your solid wood work surfaces, we suggest the use of cream-painted cabinet frontals, with the addition of an accent colour. To enhance the warm and cosy aesthetic, why not opt for a wine red or alternatively – to harness the truly natural look of the great outdoors – accent your cream palette with a gentle shade of green. Before committing to a colour, consider ordering samples of the paints you feel might work alongside rustic oak in your kitchen space.

Your chosen kitchen hardware should also support this rustic look, so we recommend the addition of solid oak cabinet door knobs, or distressed pewter cup handles. Black-painted metal pull handles also sit well within a traditional rustic theme or – for a more ‘on trend’ look – select some polished rose gold handles. Don’t be afraid to raid local antiques retailers for handles and knobs that will work alongside rustic oak.

Our matching rustic oak chopping board are another perfect addition to rustic kitchens, and will protect your worktops, too. Consider both your colours and accessories carefully to help you create a truly homely, rustic kitchen.

Wonderful Walnut: Take a Look at these Beautiful Timber Worktops

Walnut is a gorgeous timber, showcasing beautiful colour variation thanks to its pale sapwood and darker heartwood. These timber worktops are available in a variety of styles on our website, including European walnut, Premium Walnut and black American walnut.

Our European walnut worktops are the most traditional of the three, incorporating a series of staves that each measure 40mm thick and 40mm wide – perfect for exhibiting the unique grain pattern and contrasting colour of the wood. This timber is naturally hard-wearing with a delicate curved grain, providing a work surface that is both practical and decorative.

Similar to our European walnut, our Premium Walnut collection utilises narrower, 20mm-wide staves. These staves are also 40mm thick, making them an equally robust choice for wooden worktops. These slimmer staves emphasise the contrast in colour, and would be particularly well-suited to a modern home.

The final worktop in our selection of walnut surfaces is black American walnut. This darker timber is immensely luxurious, providing a rich and lustrous countertop that is ideal for lavish kitchen design and high-contrast colour schemes. These worktops are made up of 40mm staves, which slowly darken to near-black as the timber matures.

All our timber worktops are sanded to a super smooth 150-grit finish before delivery, so you can apply the finish of your choice. If you would like to get in touch to place an order, please telephone us on 01452 725145, or email

Stylish Stainless Steel Hotrods for Timber Worktops

Timber worktops are undoubtedly a thing of beauty. That being said, further embellishment in the form of a worktop hotrod set is an attractive and useful enhancement that will not disappoint.

Stainless steel hotrods are a stunning feature on any wooden worktop, and create a practical heat-proof location on which to rest hot pans and dishes, helping to protect your wooden work surface from scorch marks.

These hotrods require grooves to be routed into your worktop, which can be achieved using a round nose router cutter. Once positioned in the grooves, the hotrods will not move around, but can be removed for regular cleaning. You can also opt to position steel hotrods in a diamond or square formation – whichever style you prefer!

Whilst our timber tops are immensely durable, they are not entirely heat-resistant, so we thoroughly recommend installing our stylish and functional hotrods adjacent to hobs and range-style ovens for added convenience.

Our stainless steel hotrod set is priced at just £20, and includes one 300x12mm rod, two 200x12mm rods and two 100x12mm rods.

Don’t forget a Worktop Moisture Barrier to Protect Timber Worktops

If you’re fitting worktops above an appliance such as refrigerators, washing machines or dishwashers, a worktop moisture barrier is highly recommended to protect your timber worktops from being exposed to high levels of moisture that might cause the timber to warp or rot over time.

Despite being known as moisture barriers, we also recommend using this protective layer to reflect excess heat from ovens, microwaves and other hot appliances, too.

The barrier is provided in 1M x 750mm x 3mm sections, and can easily be attached to a worktop using silicone adhesive. A length of special tape is also provided to seal the edges of the moisture barrier. This protective layer isn’t just suited to the underside of worktops – it can also protect kitchen cabinets from the heat given off by free-standing range cookers.

Moisture barriers should only be applied once the worktop has been fully treated with Rustins Danish Oil (or an alternative finish of your choice).
